I am apart of a moms book club. Each quarter we come up with a list we want to read and vote. Every month we get together at a local place where we eat, have a drink or two, talk about the book and mom stuff. A local mom who works at the library started the group last year and it’s been great! I’ve learned from the ladies in the group and enjoy the monthly outing. This book was recommended by one of the moms and received the most votes for the quarter.

Quick Summary

Maeve Higgins, an Irish comedian, who moved to New York in 2014 on an O-1B Visa to pursue her dreams wrote about her experiences in a comical way. When reading her book, you get a feeling it’s a college student experiencing life and trying to learn to better herself. 

While my son was eating breakfest I was able to sneak in a handful of pages a day. It took me about two weeks to read the book. Maeve wrote this memoir as a narrative with a smooth descriptive style. Anyone in their 30’s reading this book, will be able to connect with what she wrote about. Such as going to Rent the Runway to rent a dress but discovering the Vera Wang number that fits amazing is too expensive, even to rent for a night. Or loving Anthropology but also being too poor for it. 

Connections Connections Connections…

Maeve talked about hating her name growing up until she got older and personally I was the same way. Senior year was the first time I’ve ever met another person with my name. Which by the way, is now starting to become common, and I wish it wasnt…. 

If you have not heard of ACTION BRONSON before reading this book, please look him up. He was famous before being on VICE TV. 

I’m telling you, I was able to connect in so many different areas of this book. I love it. This was the first time I’ve read a book and kept going “ Yes, I know what you are talking about! Yes, I totally feel the same way!” 

Maeve threw in some Irish History, which she sited her source at the end of the book, making me feel semi-confident in sharing what I learned with others. 

Favorite Part 

My Favorite section of the book is Wildflowers. I envy Maeve for having the courage to help immigrants tell their story during the time Trump closed entry for refugees. Personally, I believe she is a very strong woman that doesn’t underestimate herself and is doing great in making the world around her better. 

Is this for you? 

If you are a women between the age of 25 and 40 you will relate to Maeve on so many levels. You will laugh and say “Man, Maeve had some heart to try things she hated.”
